AM4 or AM5 — which socket should I choose?

AM4 is great for budget builds and uses DDR4; AM5 is the newer platform with DDR5 support, PCIe 5.0 on many boards, and the best future upgrade path. Pick based on motherboard/RAM you own and planned upgrades.

Which Ryzen is better for gaming vs. productivity?

For pure gaming, CPUs with 3D V-Cache (e.g., 5800X3D, 7800X3D) often lead. For heavy multitasking/creation (video, 3D, code), higher-core models (e.g., 5900X/5950X, 7900/7950X) scale better. Balance core count, cache, and budget.

Will I need a BIOS update for my motherboard?

Check your board’s CPU support list and required BIOS version before buying. Some AM4/AM5 boards need a BIOS update to boot newer chips. If your board supports BIOS Flashback, you can update without a compatible CPU installed.

Do I need a graphics card with an AMD CPU?

Most AM4 Ryzen CPUs need a discrete GPU unless the model ends with “G.” All AM5 Ryzen 7000/8000 desktop CPUs include a basic integrated GPU (good for display/output, not high-end gaming).
